WAYNE COUNTY CLERK OF COURTS

Municipal Court

Frequently Asked Questions

1. My ticket says "Juvenile" in the Court Date. What should I do?

If your ticket says "Juvenile," call the Juvenile Court at 287-5561 to schedule you court date.

2. What makes a ticket "Waiverable" vs. "Non-Waiverable"?

Most Officers will tell you at the time the ticket is given whether it is a waiverable offense or a non-waiverable offense. If you have any questions you may call the Wayne County Municipal Court.

3. How do I find out how many "Points" are on my drivers license?

You will need to call the BMV at (614) 752-7500

4. Why did I get a letter from the BMV 2 months after I already paid my ticket?

Usually, this happens when you failed to show financial responsibility at the time you received the ticket, or to the Deputy Clerk when you paid the ticket. State law now requires you to have and show insurance when you are driving any vehicle, whether the vehicle belongs to you or not. You will need to send a copy of your insurance to the address indicated on the letter from the BMV.

5. I received a ticket that says I am to appear in Shreve Mayors Court (for example), now what?

We don't have anything to do with the Mayor's Courts. We can't tell you what your cost will be. However, you will need to appear at the time and place indicated on your ticket at whichever Mayor's Court is indicated.

6. I had insurance at the time of the ticket, but still got a letter from the BMV. Why?

Valid insurance means that you were covered on the date of the ticket. Your insurance MUST be in effect on the date that you received the ticket, not the day after. At this point you must send a copy of your insurance, which includes the date you were covered to the address indicated in your letter.

7. How much does my ticket cost?

You will need to call the court for specific amounts, at (330) 287-5650

8. My ticket says that I have to appear- WHY?

You must call the Court if you have any questions about what any Officer told you when you received your ticket regarding your appearance. If you were instructed to appear you should be there at the time indicated on the ticket.

9. What happens if my ticket is paid late, or not at all?

If a ticket remains unpaid after 30 day the Judge may order your Drivers License forfeited until the ticket gets paid. This could result in further fines due.

10. I want to get my old Criminal Case expunged. How do I go about it?

The filing fee for expungement is $50.00. A motion which includes the original case number must also accompany the check. A judge will determine whether your case can be expunged.

11. I want to appeal the decision in my case. What do I do?

You will need to contact an attorney. The court cost to appeal a case is $100.00

12. How do I get my Driver's License back after it has been suspended?

There are many reasons and many lengths of time regarding suspensions. The Judge's secretary handles the license suspensions with the Municipal Court.

13. How many points do I get for a speeding ticket?

That depends on many things, including the amount of the speed and whether it is the first, second, third offense in the year.

14. Can you give me the name of an attorney?

We are not allowed to refer attorneys to anyone-however you may consult your Yellow pages in the phone book. Call attorneys offices and ask whether they handle cases of your nature. Then make an appointment and decide whether you are comfortable working with a particular attorney.

15. I can't be there on my Court date on my ticket-what should I do?

You must submit a written request to the Judge requesting a Continuance. He will not accept phone calls or verbal request. This request must include your Case Number and the reason why you cannot be here on that specific date, along with your name, address & phone number. This request can be mailed, faxed or hand delivered.
