Jim Carmichael
In his second term in office as State Representative, Carmichael introduced H.B. 262 to modify Ohio’s election laws and assist with the recruitment of poll workers in Ohio. H.B. 262 also incorporated sweeping reform to bring Ohio in line with the Help America Vote Act. Governor Taft signed the legislation into law on May 7, 2004. In the 125th General Assembly, Carmichael continued to serve as Chairman of the State Government Committee, a committee at the center of the debate involving Campaign Finance Reform during a Special Session called by the Governor in December of 2004. During this General Assembly, Carmichael sponsored H.B. 9, which helps Ohio’s farmers in numerous ways. Also, he sponsored H.B. 297, which raises awareness for Lyme Disease in Ohio.
Wayne County Commissioner and State Representative are not the only public offices Carmichael has held. He served as the Mayor of Shreve from 1971 to 1979. He provided fair and accurate voter services as a member of the Wayne County Board of Elections from 1980 to 1999 and as Chairman for the last ten of those years. He also served his fellow WayneCounty residents as Chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party.
Carmichael’s leadership is not limited to elected office. He spent thirty-two years working for what is now Dominion East Ohio Gas Company. He began reading meters and through hard work and dedication, he rose to be District Manager for the Wooster Region.
